About
Tom Schurr was born in a small town in the Black Forest, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio at fifteen months old, and then to New York at eleven, in the summer of 1967. He studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and spent his first working years driving a cab around Manhattan, observing the city.
For more than five decades, his practice has moved between painting, photography, video, print processes and constructed objects.
He often works in series, returning to a single subject for years at a time: television images, urban landscapes, shifting light, material surfaces. Images are copied, rephotographed, layered, erased and reworked until something unforeseen appears.
New York and the archive
Throughout the 1990s, Tom recorded life in and around New York City through video, sound and photography. A former mill in Greenpoint became a place to live and make art, allowing painting, photography, video, collaboration and daily life to overlap.
